St. Louis-area Whole Foods Market stores are helping divert some of the 15 billion wine corks that end up in landfills each year by joining the local Rewind Your Wine Cork Recycling Program. Whole Foods Market locations in Brentwood and Town & Country are participating in the program and will kick off their collection efforts by hosting cork drives during the month of July. Area residents are encouraged to bring a handful or a bagful of corks to help initiate Whole Foods Market’s participation as the first grocer to join the program.
Jill Duncan, Whole Foods Market Marketing Specialist says, “I am a firm believer in recycling, and more importantly, reusing. It makes perfect sense for our stores to take the lead in collecting wine corks, as this is a direct link to our core value of ‘caring about our communities and environment’. We have many customers inquiring about cork recycling and I am excited to promote a specific, locally-driven recycling program. I know our dedicated customers will stand firmly behind this initiative, as they do with our many other environmentally conscious programs. Finally, we all have a good home for our personal stash of corks!”
Corks collected during the drives and in all the regional efforts undertaken by the Rewind Your Wine team, will be delivered to Yemm & Hart, a Missouri company that recycles corks into reusable building materials, such as cork tiles.
Natural and synthetic wine and champagne corks will be accepted. There is no limit to the number of corks area residents may bring. After the cork drives, both Whole Foods Market locations will serve as a drop-off point for area residents who wish to continue to collect and recycle wine corks for environmental consciousness.

Once again Whole Foods is leading the charge in making a difference in our community. So often companies have good intentions, but lack the drive to actually put forth new programs in action. Well done, WFM!
